"Starr Centre Association": The Starr Centre Association, Philadelphia, Pa.: A room for which, with the rear room the shoe-maker pays ten dollars a month. The entire house is rented from an agent for twenty dollars a month.  The landord subdivides the rooms and sublets them furnished to a shifting undesirable class.

It used to grant unlimited credit to members.  On re-organization it ruled that no credit be allowed, and that shop-assistants must furnish a bond of $100.  In case of death of a member or of his family a small grant is made in proportion to the amount of purchase.  Non-members may not buy at the store, as this involves increased taxation by the State.

It does not aim at big profits or high dividends.  In addition to collecting a good reserve fund, it distributes 10% of the profits to its employes in proportion to their wages, and besides a 2% dividend to members it makes substabtial [sic] grants to trades-unions, workingmen's convalescent homes, and to the special sick pay and pension fund for its own people.
