Coöperative Dairies and Creameries: Coöperative Societies, Holland: The co-operative dairies of Holland in contrast with those of its neighbor, Germany, have proved of considerable success. The former produce almost four fifths of the butter in their country. The dairies seen above approximate each 180,000 kilograms (396,000 lb.) of butter yearly. There were 780 such co-operative dairies in Holland in 1914, producing 38,000,000 kilos (83,600,000 lbs.) of butter. International Co-operative Bulletin, July, 1914.

It is one of the largest German societies with 51 distributive branches, dealing in groceries, drapery, household articles, boots and shoes. Its productive department has mills, a bakery, dairy, laundry, and mineral water factory, employing a total of 779 persons. The Society pays a dividend of 10% and yearly sets aside a large sum for charitable, educational and other purposes. Every week it distributes 15000 copies of the Cooperative Journal gratis.

Its stock consists of groceries, drapery, household articles, boots and shoes, toys, clothing, dairy goods, and bread. More than 1/6 of the goods sold are obtained at wholesale. Six co-operative dairies supply the butter. 12 bakers' ovens annually produce 10,000,000 lbs. of bread. Its bakers work day and night in 8 hour shifts. Dresden authorities have been hostile to the Society and added a new tax on turnover and branches, obliging it to increase prices of goods, with the express object of protecting the smaller dealer. 2/3 of its employees are women.
