Romanos I

Byzantine

Obv.: Christ seated facing, bearded, on wide lyre-backed throne, wearing tunic and himation, r. hand blessing outwards in sling of cloak, l. hand holding book (by spine) on knee. Rev.: In center, Romanus I standing facing, bearded, wearing crown with cross and traditional loros whose fringed end ornamented by + (with pellets at corners forming square around it), passes over l. arm. In r. hand, scepter; in l., akakia. To l., half-length figure of Constantine VII facing, beardless; to r., larger half-length figure of Christopher facing, bearded. Each wears crown with cross and chlamys with tablion.
