Painted canvas fragment

Painted canvas fragment

1905 - 1970

Barnett Newman

American

Painted plain weave cotton duck canvas fragment with knife cut edges and a white ground layer. A layer of bright reddish orange paint is applied by brush over the white ground and has been applied diagonally with respect to the canvas weave. The fragment's edges are also cut diagonally with respect to the canvas weave. The paint is slightly thicker in areas and the gloss is variable across the surface. There are accretions embedded in the paint surface.
