Painted canvas fragment
1905 - 1970
Barnett Newman
American
Painted plain weave cotton duck canvas fragment with knife cut edges and no apparent ground layer. The fragment has dark red paint applied directly on the raw canvas. There appears to be matte paint strokes over a glossy dark red layer, which has been applied diagonally with respect to the canvas weave. There are canvas fibers stuck to the glossy surface. There are inscriptions (illegible) in transparent black ink or paint.
