Painted canvas fragment

Painted canvas fragment

1905 - 1970

Barnett Newman

American

Painted plain weave cotton duck canvas fragment with knife cut edges and a white ground layer covering part of the fragment. The white ground layer has a taped edge. Red paint is applied with a dry brush diagonally with respect to the canvas weave in two distinct areas - on top of the white ground and directly on the raw canvas where no ground is present.
