Painted canvas fragment

Painted canvas fragment

1905 - 1970

Barnett Newman

American

Painted plain weave cotton duck canvas fragment with knife cut edges and no apparent ground layer. The fragment has dark red paint applied directly on the raw canvas. Areas of matte and glossy paint have been applied diagonally with respect to the canvas weave. The red paint has a dry brush edge, which leaves an area of raw canvas visible. There are canvas fibers stuck to the glossy surface.
