Painted canvas fragment

Painted canvas fragment

1905 - 1970

Barnett Newman

American

Painted plain weave cotton duck canvas fragment with knife cut edges. The fragment has a white ground layer, which has a taped edge revealing a small area of raw canvas. A layer of red paint, with matte and glossy areas, covers the white ground and a dry brush edge reveals the underlying white layer and runs along the taped edge of the ground. The white and red paint layers are applied diagonally with respect to the canvas weave.
