Kakubha Ragini, or Lady with Three Peacocks (painting, recto), possibly from a Ragamala (Garland of Melodies) Series
Indian
The Kakubha Ragini is represented through several artistic conventions, but the common theme is a female heroine waiting for her lover and holding flowers or flower garlands. Here, the lady in the center holds two garlands which attract two peacocks. This painting is a pictorial metaphor for a raga, a musical phrase that is used as the basis for improvisation.
