Scene from Roman Antiquity

Scene from Roman Antiquity

1718 - 1778

Classical architectural, setting perhaps the crypt of a church. Two tombs, one set into the wall, another, free-standing, dominate the scene. In the center are grouped three figures, two standing women in long robes, and a seated male figure who grasps the arm—imploringly—of one of the women. Another male, also in antique costume sits at the right and gazes at the figures. A schematically drawn figure with a staff peers from behind a stairway in the distant right background.
