Section of an Architectural Frieze

Coptic

End or corner section of an architectural frieze, decorated in relatively deep, naturalistic relief. Continuous acanthus scroll issues from corner of block, immediately adjacent to an undecorated, roughly finished portion of the block. Loops formed by the dramatic curve of the acanthus leaves are filled with a cone and a seven-petalled rosette. Block is bordered along both edges by a plain, narrow fillet. Traces of a painted plaster coating remain.
