Obverse: Alphonso XII in left profile, bare-headed; reverse: crowned coat of arms (two castles, two lions, three fleurs-de-lys at center = Castile-Leon, with the escutcheon representing Anjou) with column at either side. Two pillars represent the Straits of Gibraltar; a banner reads "PLUS ULTRA." A pomegranate at the bottom represents Granada.
