Procession at Datia
Indian
The drawing depicts a large procession featuring, at the center, an elephant. Mounted on the animal is a rider (mahout) that holds the reins with one hand and a fly whisk up with the other. Behind him is a male figure, whose elegant dress and jewelry suggest he is a member of royalty. Both hands hold onto a sword (talwar) in front of him. The elephant is flanked by rows of attendants that are either on foot or on horseback. Some carry swords, matchlock guns, spears, and large black shields.
