Seated Prince Smoking Hookah on a Terrace, Accompanied by an Attendant

Indian

The painting features a prince, wearing a white turban and robe (jama) seated on a terrace overlooking a large body of water. He leans against a large bolster while smoking hookah. To his left is a long, curved sword with a gold hilt. In front of him is a tray with paan, a delicacy in South Asia consisting of betel leaf with areca nut. Behind the prince is an attendant, also wearing a white turban and robe. He carries a peacock feather fan over his right shoulder, which denotes the prince’s royal status. Two ships sail on the water and in the distance.
