Krishna Fluting in the Forest
Indian
In the center of this painting, Krishna, the eighth avatar of the Hindu god Vishnu who is worshipped as a deity in his own right, stands on the bank of a river filled with water lilies. Fluting, he faces leftward toward the sun, surrounded by trees and flowers. The painting may represent verses in the Bhagavat Purana, when Krishna summons the gopis (milkmaids).
