Taj Mahal, Agra
Indian
The watercolor painting depicts the Taj Mahal, the mausoleum for Mumtaz Mahal, who was the beloved wife of Mughal emperor Shah Jahan. The white marble tomb sits on a square plinth. It is a large, multi-cubed structure with chamfered corners. Large, arch-shaped doorway (iwan) is decorated with inlaid flowers and Qur’anic verses. The tomb is topped by a large, onion-shaped dome and finial. Flanking the base of the dome are two chhatri (canopy), a large, dome-like structures that commonly adorn Indian architecture. Four minarets frame the tomb, one at each corner.
