Border tile with a central palmette flanked by interlacing split-palmettes
Ottoman
The red border tile in the Fogg collection probably comes from the famed Altin Yol, or Golden Way of the Topkapi Palace, which was also decorated during this period. Forming part of a continuous band six inches wide, this tile is again 9 1/2 inches long. It is beveled on two edges, and consists of tendril ornaments in white and blue, while the main color, built out from the slip in thick application, is the famous Iznik red. A bare mininmum of dark-blue drawing defines the forms, while it is the colors themselves that predominate. entered by sb02/04/03
