Travelers in Mist and Rain

Travelers in Mist and Rain

Unknown Artist

Japanese

The monochromatic painting depicts three tiny figures and a donkey traveling on a path toward a cluster of trees in the lower left corner of the composition while mountains obscured by rain and mist appear in shadowlike form in the background. Executed with a relatively wet brush, the landscape elements appear as light gray washes of ink; the path in the foreground is reserved in white, which help to bring greater focus to the diminutive traveling figures. A signature and pictorial seal appear at the upper left corner of the composition.
