Fragment with Figures Between Urns

Fragment with Figures Between Urns

Byzantine

Pairs of large leaves branch upward from urns in V-shaped patterns; these are joined at top by medallions containing animals. The urns, leaves, and medallions visually imitate the sort of architectural arcade that typically frames Dionysiac revelers and dancers in Roman and Byzantine art. Between the urns are animals and human figures. Above the leaves are birds, two pairs touching beaks and one alone. Two horizontal stripes are visible at bottom. The imagery is woven in dark reddish purple yarn, with details added in a light brown thread.
