A work made of etching from one copper plate in black on white wove paper.

Target I

1967

Jasper Johns (American, born 1930) printed by Donn Steward (American, 1921-1986) published by Universal Limited Art Editions (American, founded 1955)

United States

Johns's first lithograph was a target; he chose the same subject for his first etching. Target I was printed in a tiny edition, in part because of the rarity of the paper—handmade by the Grosmans' neighbor Jeff Goodman—and also because it was made primarily for Johns's personal edification.
