Saint Martin with his Horse in a Ship

c. 1561

Johannes and Lucas van Doetecum (Flemish, active in Antwerp, 1554-1575) after Hieronymus Bosch (Netherlandish, c. 1450-1516)

Flanders

In Hieronymus Bosch’s antic vision of the world, appearances were often deceiving. Here Saint Martin’s pious act of dividing his cloak to clothe a naked beggar takes place within a chaotic panorama of beggars of all types—both those genuinely afflicted by deprivation and disease and mere charlatans.
