The whimsical trees and stately brick building of this sampler are embroidered on a linen and wool ground. During the late 18th and early 19th centuries, fabric that contained both linen and wool (or linsey-woolsey) was made in the home or by local cottage industry and contributed to the reduced dependency on the import of English wool. This sampler may have been made at home, as linsey-woolsey fabric was not commonly used in samplers executed at schools or under the direction of teachers.
Linen and wool, plain weave; embroidered with silk in cross and satin stitches
