Paul Rieth (English, 1871-1925) printed by Thomas Way, Lithographer published by Underground Electric Railways Company of London Limited
England
Displayed on the front of buses that traversed the city’s streets, small posters like this example would have been seen by almost every Londoner. Members of the public would have struggled to find such modernist impulses in the annual Royal Academy of Arts Exhibition or in commercial galleries. The nonnaturalistic colors, simplified abstracted forms, and flattened space common in posters published by the Underground in these years served to expose the public to new advances in art in a gallery available to all.
