The Second Volume by Bruant

1893

Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec French, 1864-1901

France

Due to the dissemination of Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec’s earlier posters, Bruant’s conspicuous silhouette was so recognizable by 1893 that the artist could depict him entirely from behind. This poster promoted the publication of a volume of Bruant’s controversial songs and monologues that was sold both in Bruant’s cabaret and in bookshops throughout Paris. The book itself was illustrated by another Montmartre artist, Théophile Alexandre Steinlen, who worked frequently with Bruant on his published materials.
