A work made of etching, selectively wiped, on ivory japanese paper.

Cloître St. Maclou, Rouen, II

1909

John Marin American, 1870-1953

United States

This etching offers a highly ornamented facade that is pushed forward to the very surface of the picture plane and divided into a geometric grid of trees, doors, and windowpanes. Cloître St. Maclou, Rouen, II and St. Ouen, Rouen, France document Marin’s conscious efforts to broaden his handling and loosen his technique in order to evoke sensation.
