James McNeill Whistler American, 1834-1903

United States

Whistler experimented with color lithography between 1890 and 1893, creating a small selection of work that demonstrates his quest to translate achievements in pastel drawing to a printed medium. For color transfer lithographs he used shades of black and dark gray ink to provide structure for the compositions, adding carefully placed touches of color to enliven the images.
