Through the dense cluster of barren trees in this print, one can make out the dome and portico of the current Museum of Science and Industry, the former Palace of Fine Arts at the 1893 Columbian Exposition. The building was designed by D. H. Burnham and Company, along with architect Charles B. Atwood. Until 1920, the building housed the Columbian Museum, a precursor to the Field Museum. Reed was a master etcher, and he often captured brooding scenes around Chicago and Ox-Bow Summer School of Art.
