A work made of etching and aquatint in brown on ivory chine, laid down on ivory wove paper (chine collé).

Exotic Flower (Woman in a Mantilla)

1868

Édouard Manet (French, 1832-1883) published by Philippe Burty (French, 1830-1890) written by Armand Renaud (French, 1836-1895)

France

Exotic Flower is an original composition, not based on a painting. A model for the etching is found among the Caprichos of Goya; unlike Goya, Manet visually isolated his figure, choosing not to provide a context for it.
