Rembrandt Peale (American, 1778–1860)

United States

Coleman Sellers (1781-1834) married Rembrandt Peale's sister, Sofonisba Anguissola (1786-1859), in 1805. Sellers, an engineer and inventor, financed several of Peale’s European trips, taken to further the artist’s education and career. This painting was probably completed shortly after Seller’s unexpected death; an earlier version of the work (private collection) was completed in 1832.
