Adrien Barrère French, 1877-1931

France

This image of stereotypical German servicemen served as the illustrative top part of a poster for an exhibition of assorted documents, photographs, posters, paintings, and drawings dealing with the subject of German war crimes. The exhibition was held in Paris at Galerie Georges Petit, October 1–30, 1917, and was organized by, and held as a benefit for, the league Souvenez-Vous!. Gerbeviller, in the Lorraine region of France, suffered great devastation at the hands of Bavarian troops in August 1914.
