Jug

Before 1563

Germany, Rhineland, and England, London

Germany

Rhenish salt-glazed stoneware jugs were popular imports in Elizabethan England, where silversmiths embellished them with decorative mounts. Although the material of this vessel is not intrinsically unique or rare—as is the case with the Nautilus-Shell Cup and Coconut Cup also on display in this gallery—its mottled surface nevertheless gives the work a rich, exotic appearance.
