Cottonwood Hybrid

Cottonwood Hybrid

1956

Richard Hunt American, 1935-2023

United States

Cottonwood Hybrid is one of Richard Hunt’s first welded sculptures to feature large wood elements. The organic wooden forms meet the hard edges of industrial metal in a complex interplay of positive and negative space, with volumes displaced by concave or hollow shapes and planar elements projecting into space. In the early 1970s, Hunt began to make more “hybrids”—or figures that “[bring] things together to create something that’s a little different” from the component parts.
