Australian Landscape 2004 #1

2004

Marvin Lipofsky (American, 1938–2016) with Tom Rowney (Australian, active since 1989), Alexandra Chambers (Australian, born United States, 1975), Andrew Laury (probably Australian, active early 21st century), and Paul Clemins (probably Australian, active early 21st century) Denizen Glass Studio, North Manly, Australia

North Manly

Australian Landscape 2004 #1 is simultaneously otherworldly and grounded in place. Vibrant stripes of pink, yellow, and blue undulate through the carved glass form, which opens in places to reveal a hollow interior. Marvin Lipofsky often named his sculptures after the location where he collaborated with other glass professionals to create the base shape. This practice earned him the moniker “roving ambassador of glass,” as he traveled around the world making lively blown glassworks that he then shipped back to his California, studio to carve, etch, grind, and sand into their final, wild forms.
