California Loop Series #25

1969

Marvin Lipofsky (American, 1938–2016) University of California Berkeley, Berkeley, California

Berkeley

To make California Loop Series #25, Marvin Lipofsky manipulated molten glass into surprising forms and added color by coating it in vibrant flocking (dense microfibers applied using adhesive). It is one of Lipofsky’s breakout abstract glass sculptures, made early in his career. The international studio glass movement, in which artists made unique glassworks in small studios, was relatively new in the 1960s, and Lipofsky wanted to take the medium in novel directions.
