Kanga

2008

Produced in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania

Dar es Salaam

Designed to honor the 2008 election of President Barack Obama, this kanga is also a celebration of his East African connections. Kenyans express a great sense of pride in Obama’s family roots there—very similar to that felt by Chicagoans. He was the first sitting American president to visit Kenya, and his beloved “Granny Sarah” undoubtedly owned and wore kanga cloths in her hometown village of Kogelo in western Kenya.
