Peter Hujar American, 1934-1987
United States
In the mid-1960s, while Hujar was working as a commercial photographer, he earned a coveted spot in a master
class taught by photographer Richard Avedon and art director Marvin Israel. For his final project, Hujar photographed himself as he danced around his empty studio. The artist’s movements recall the warm-up exercises of dancers, offering a direct and early example of Hujar’s interest in performance.
