Niña Johnson No. 10

Niña Johnson No. 10

1965

Beatriz González Colombian, born 1932

Colombia

Beatriz González’s Niña Johnson series is one of the earliest examples of her working with images appropriated from newspapers and magazines. In this series González drew young girls with the bodies of children but the face of US President Lyndon Johnson, here based on a photograph in Life magazine. Made near the height of the Vietnam War, this jarring drawing reveals the artist’s ongoing critique of American-sanctioned violence and abuses of power.
