Caroline Kent’s Not buried, but just under the surface eludes any singular interpretation. The black gesso ground recedes while white geometric shapes and expressive lines of electric blue and green come to the foreground. Kent has stated that her compositions develop from “things that I’ve seen in the world that carry a profound presence” but that have lost their original form, becoming abstracted and unrecognizable. Kent also connects her process to the experience of viewing foreign language films with subtitles, describing it as an exploration of what is “gained in translation.”
