Coat from the HAND ON HEART Collection, Autumn/Winter

2011–12

Walter Van Beirendonck Belgian, born 1957

This coat’s design emphasizes the idea that what we wear expresses who we are and how we relate to the world. Walter Van Beirendonck combined a classic menswear silhouette with unexpected additions such as the hand-shaped zippered pocket.

Van Beirendonck is an original member of the Antwerp Six, an influential avant-garde fashion group, and continues to create designs with un- conventional details and graphic elements that comment on contemporary social issues such as gender and sexual identity.
