Wang Tiande 王天德 Chinese (b. 1960)

China

Instead of brushes, Wang Tiande used lit incense sticks to “paint” this work. His groundbreaking technique has transformed traditional landscape painting and calligraphy and emphasizes painting’s ephemeral quality. At the bottom of the fragile landscape, Wang mounted a piece of ink rubbing from a historical calligraphy album. By rethinking conventional artistic methods, Wang has created a fragmented composition that highlights evolving art traditions in contemporary China.
