Le volant d'Artimon: Poèmes

Louis Marcouissis spent the early part of his career exploring Cubism, but he later embraced different media and styles. His collaboration here with the Belgian poet Paul Dermée exemplifies the Cubist influence that would persist in his work through his shift into illustration and printmaking in the 1930s. The three woodcuts Marcouissis designed to accompany Dermée’s poems all use stark, black-and-white compositions. The cover, depicting an abstracted ship composed of overlapping boxy shapes, refers to the titular poem, which translates to “the mizzen steering wheel.”
