Japan
Mikiko Hara’s photographs spring from an unusual trust in the camera’s eye. Deliberately risking imbalance and uneven focus, she composes her images without looking through the viewfinder of her medium-format analog camera. Instead she captures ordinary moments on the streets of Tokyo and its surrounding environs with the camera discreetly positioned at her chest or waist. This approach yields fragmentary and unvarnished impressions of the everyday, as in this pair of off-kilter snapshots depicting Tokyo’s urban sprawl, or unaware subjects on a train platform.
