Untitled, from the series "Black Muslims"

c. 1975

Valeria “Mikki” Ferrill American, born 1937

United States

South Side photojournalist Mikki Ferrill was among a handful of photographers who gained access to events hosted by the Chicago-based Nation of Islam. Among these events was the annual Saviours’ Day convention, established by leader Elijah Muhammad to honor the teachings of the Nation of Islam’s founder, Wallace Fard Muhammad. This unpublished photograph of a protestor reacting to Elijah Muhammad’s address offers a rare glimpse into the inner workings of a group that maintained close control over its public image.
