About 1975

Valeria “Mikki” Ferrill American, born 1937

United States

On February 25, 1975, one day before the Nation of Islam’s annual Saviours’ Day convention, Elijah Muhammad, the group’s leader, died of congestive heart failure. The event that year became a memorial, attended by thousands of followers and many community leaders. South Side photojournalist Mikki Ferrill photographed the funeral procession and the many tributes paid to Muhammad, including a eulogy by the Reverend Jesse Jackson.
