Born in Havana, Cuba, in 1925, and educated at the Academia de San Alejandro, Wifredo Arcay arrived in Paris in 1949. He continued his education in France at the Grande Chaumière and the Atelier d’Art Abstrait. Arcay was associated with leading members of the Parisian avant-garde, including Jean Arp and Fernand Léger. His interest in space and Neoplasticism, a style of abstraction exclusively composed of primary colors and horizontal and vertical lines, is evident in his hard-edged, abstract works. Throughout his career, Arcay maintained his connections to the Cuban art scene as a member of the group Los Diez Pintores Concretos (Ten Concrete Painters).
