The Swimmer in the Tank, from Jazz

1947

Henri Matisse (French, 1869–1954) printed by Edmond Vairel (French, 1903-1973) published by Tériade for Éditions Verve (French, 1943–1975)

France

In The Swimmer in the Tank, as in some other plates including The Cowboy (next case), Matisse works with the book form through a balance of the two sheets that make up the spread. Here, a spectator watches a female swimmer in a tank.
