A work made of color pochoir with gouache and photolithograph in black on ivory wove paper.

The Clown, from Jazz

1947

Henri Matisse (French, 1869–1954) printed by Edmond Vairel (French, 1903-1973) published by Tériade for Éditions Verve (French, 1943–1975)

France

The frontispiece shows the first image of the book—the Clown. The pochoir technique for creating the color was a hand process that involved applying gouache within a cut stencil using a wide, flat brush. If you look closely, you can sometimes see the brush strokes.
