Race: I. Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin

1964, printed 1964/65

Evan Evans American, born c. 1905-unknown

United States

The son of the noted English photographer Frederick H. Evans (one of whose pictures also hangs in this gallery), Evan Evans followed his father into photography. Edwards purchased six of his photographs in 1965, all made at the Road America racecourse in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin, the previous year. With close-ups of cars and drivers against a darkly receding background, the images imply motion and speed and would have appealed to the curator, who also admired Danny Lyon’s bike riders and Robert Riger’s racehorses (on view in this gallery as well). This photograph shows Bud Gates driving a Genie Mk.8 Chevrolet; he came in 17th in the race.
