Japan

In Japan clothing has been made from paper from as early as the eighth century. In most subsequent periods down to modern times, paper garments were usually worn by members of the lower classes. This short outercoat, or haori, combines light brown and tan paper with blue silk, both embellished with a small-scale stenciled pattern of swirling dots.
