Sphere Table

2013

Hella Jongerius (Dutch, born 1963) Manufactured by Vitra (Swiss, founded 1950)

Hella Jongerius developed Sphere Table as part of a suite of furniture for the North Delegates Lounge in the headquarters of the United Nations, a modern building originally completed in 1952. This solid wood table includes a conventional desk with tapered legs and a single central drawer, as well as a large half-sphere, or “bubble,” in translucent pastel acrylic. Jongerius intended this notable feature to create privacy and focus for delegates working in a communal, open-plan lounge and workspace.
